Core Readings is a curated, openly accessible collection of resources for graduate-level courses in cataloging, metadata, and knowledge organization. It’s an evolving, citable, and machine-readable update to the 2001 Knowledge Structures Toolbox, designed as a flexible teaching tool.
Developed first for a required course in the ALA MLS program, it is openly available for study, reuse, and adaptation — a public map of the field that is being built in real time and will be complete by the end of November 2026. There are excellent, prizewinning textbooks in this field; devaluing that labor isn’t the goal here. Core Readings instead cultivates healthy infophilic engagement: training the field’s future access-advocates to read primary sources — not a synthesis of a fast-moving discipline — is both a skill and a requirement for understanding infrastructure for the commons.
Using this guide: each entry combines a citation, a stable access link where available, a document type, and a brief annotation. It is selective rather than comprehensive.

The Knowledge Structures Toolbox was developed in 2001–2002 for teaching information organization at the University of Arizona. It was an early linked teaching environment connecting concepts, sources, and tools for reusable instruction. Its commons-oriented premise informed later work in metadata education, including the Metadata Education and Research Information Commons (MERIC).
MERIC was a proposed collaborative teaching-and-research commons for metadata education. Anita S. Coleman led development of its proof-of-concept clearinghouse. A University of North Texas prototype by William Moen and his class followed, but the initiative did not become a sustained production service.
The 2026 Core Readings guide returns to that premise in a versioned, openly described, and machine-readable form. The Toolbox anticipated later open course guides, online bibliographies, and teaching-resource collections in cataloging, metadata, and knowledge organization.
